An eco-friendly means of travel is one that uses less energy per passenger, produces fewer emissions, and creates less waste along the way. In most everyday situations, the greenest options are walking and biking, followed by public transportation like trains, subways, buses, and shared shuttles. When longer distances are necessary, choosing the lowest-impact mode available—and filling seats when possible—makes the biggest difference.
For short trips, walking and biking are typically the most eco-friendly because they require no fuel and produce no tailpipe emissions. They also avoid parking needs and reduce traffic congestion, which indirectly cuts pollution in busy areas.
Trains and buses generally have a smaller carbon footprint per passenger than driving alone, especially when routes are well-used. Rail travel is often a standout for intercity trips because it can move many passengers efficiently, and in some regions it’s powered partly or fully by cleaner electricity sources.
If a car is the practical choice, sharing rides is one of the easiest ways to lower impact. A full car spreads the emissions across more passengers. Choosing a fuel-efficient vehicle (or an electric vehicle where charging is available) can further reduce emissions, particularly for frequent travel.
Air travel is usually the least eco-friendly option per trip, but sometimes it’s unavoidable. When flying, nonstop routes typically create fewer emissions than itineraries with multiple takeoffs and landings. Packing lighter and bringing reusables can also reduce waste and marginally improve fuel efficiency.

Carry a refillable water bottle, a reusable tote, and a small set of utensils, then prioritize refills and package-free snacks. Choosing accommodations with recycling and using digital tickets/receipts also helps cut single-use items.
